We are the local Bloom group for Crook of Devon and Drum, and as well as planters around the village, we have also been making areas with wild flowers and other plants for pollinators and wildlife. We have a bench and wildlife bed on the Green by the main road in Crook of Devon, and wildflowers by the bus stop there. Residents in Drum have enhanced the triangular grass area with wild planting, leaving areas of long grass for creatures to shelter.
In 2021, we took responsibility for an area at the west end of the village, which was unsightly, and sowed a native meadow mix, with annual and perennial grasses and flowering plants. In spring 2023, we have completed a small community orchard area beside a foot path behind the new graveyard, with 12 fruit trees, wildflowers and bulbs, with help from a grant from PKC’s Nature Restoration Fund.
We supply some free hanging baskets to residents who will care for them, and have recruited local people to “adopt” a planter near them to water and tidy over the summer.
